Description: Item/Description: Signed color lithograph by Polish artist, Simon Natan Karczar (1903-1982). Depiction of the reading of Eichah ( Book of Lamentations) in synagogue. Congregants seated on the ground and on low benches, shoes off, as signs of mourning listen to the reading of the book of Eichah. The book, read annually on the ninth of Av in the Jewish calendar, commemorates the destruction of the ancient Temples in Jerusalem. Artist signed lower right on work and below in pencil: S. Karczmar, and CA on lower left.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1903, Simon Karczmar studied art in Paris, where he lived for twenty years and emigrated to Israel in 1962. Many of his works evoke his experiences in Eastern Europe, specifically his childhood memories of vacations spent at his grandfather's house in Lithuania. Many works depict daily life in the shtetl (Yiddish for little town) rural villages with significant Jewish populations that could once be found throughout Eastern Europe.
