Description: Item/Description: A pair of Judaic themed mixed media pastel and watercolor on paper drawings by Polish artist, Simon Natan Karczmar (1903-1982). Each depicts a Jewish holiday: Succoth (harvest festival) and Simchat Torah (celebration of completion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings).
The Succoth drawing is of a Chasidic gentleman holding a lulav and etrog, a rural village in the background. Charming, beautiful hues. Artist signed lower right: S. Karczmar. Matted. Painted wood frame.
The Simchat Torah drawing shows a procession of men carrying Torahs jovially celebrating the holiday according to tradition. Jewel tone hues, clever use of shadows and depth. Artist signed lower right: S. Karczmar. Matted. Painted wood frame.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1903, Simon Karczmar studied art in Paris, where he lived for twenty years and emigrated to Israel in 1962. Many of his works evoke his experiences in Eastern Europe, specifically his childhood memories of vacations spent at his grandfather's house in Lithuania. Many works depict daily life in the shtetl (Yiddish for little town) rural villages with significant Jewish populations that could once be found throughout Eastern Europe.

Condition: Very Good. Colors vivid. No evidence of rips or tears. Art not examined out of frames. Surface use and age wear includes scratches chips to frames.
