Description: Item/Description: Decorative hand carved dramatic Galoa Gabon style mask. The Galoa people of western Gabon were hunters before turning to agriculture and fishing. Masks of this genre , known as okukwe, were made for ceremonies, rites of passage, funerals and initiation rituals. Believed to disperse �evil powers and spirits�. Painted white with red/ black striations. The central, vertical arrangement of black or dark brown colored, divided triangles on the kaolin white mask face are typical of this style of �okukwe mask�. (African mask, Galoa, Gabon, Ceremonial, Spirits, Afterlife).
