Description: Item/Description: Decorative Songye style hand carved African mask, Democratic Republic of Congo. Decorative striated face mask, known as kifwebe. The grooved striated pattern is a common characteristic. The white paint symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul, while the brown symbolizes nature as a positive force. The stripes also mimic those of a zebra. Masks such as these were used during ceremonies and funerals processions of important leaders.
