Description
Description: Item/Description: Stipple and line engraving print based on Edward Savage's 1789-96 painting and engraved by J. Sartain. American's first president is shown seated at a table with his left hand upon a map of the District of Columbia and his right arm on the shoulder of George Washington Parke Custis. At the other end of the table are Martha Washington, Eleanor Parke Custis and William (Billy) Lee, the general's African American servant (the two children are Martha's grandchildren by her first husband, adopted in 1781 after being orphaned). A glimpse of the Potomac River indicates that the setting is Mount Vernon.
