Description: Item/Description: French street scene. Rue Decartes. Parisian street scene features a hotel with cafe. A steepled church can be seen further down the road. Beautifully done. Skillful use of color and light. Signed and dated lower right: Rene Dulieu 57. Gallery label adhered to back reads in part: Maria Astoville Galleries, Madison Ave., New York.
Ren� Dulieu (French, 1903-1992) self taught, he regularly painted the villages, monuments or forest landscapes of the Ru de Retz valley. In Paris, he then painted more particularly the Marais district and its old mansions, as well as buildings before their demolition, thus fixing the image of this Paris that has now disappeared. His paintings represent almost faithfully the details of a little austere architecture and he embellishes them with the bright colors of the advertising posters that were still found on the walls of Paris at that time.

Condition: Very Good. Free of rips, tears or craquelure. Paint intact, maybe somewhat darkened. Thick impasto strokes in some areas. Age and wear includes scuffs, scratches, paint loss to distressed painted frame.
