Caniff had sought uniformed service during World War II, only to find himself sidelined by a 4-F classification. So he created Male Call as a pro-bono morale-booster comic strip for the armed forces -- originally as a spinoff of Terry and the Pirates. Evolving into a showcase for an original character, the voluptuous but chaste Miss Lace, (Comic Book Art)
