Description: Item/Description: Three assorted decorative African masks. Lot includes:
- Hand carved, long and narrow, decorative Marka style mask by the Maraka people of Mali. The mask portrays a combination of human and antelope features: elongated human face and antler horns. This mixing of the species is believed to help the wearer acquire the speed and agility of the antelope. These masks were used in ceremonies to ensure a successful hunt or a bountiful harvest. As is typical of these masks, the face is elongated, the mouth very narrow with raised lips, and the eyes cast downward, a show of respect common in many African masks. Surface covered with a finely carved linear repetitive pattern. (Ceremonial, Tribal, Soninke, Sculpture)
